Wilderness Handgun Safety Course (WHSC)
The Wilderness Handgun Safety Course (WHSC) is designed to apply to advanced level handgun users, specifically for training certification relating to the use of restricted firearms/prohibited handguns for lawful wilderness occupations.
The Firearms Act of Canada establishes legislative requirements which an individual must satisfy (Canadian Firearms Safety Course/Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course (CRFSC) to obtain a Firearms Licence; the WHSC is designed to apply to advanced level handgun users.
Existing firearms safety courses across Canada have a proven track record in the reduction of firearm related incidents. Most of these courses have been designed and delivered for firearms use in a specific activity.
Firearms owners and users have social and legislative responsibilities. Throughout this course, you will become familiar with those responsibilities.
The existence of this course should not be considered an acknowledgment that all trappers, bear baiters, geologists, or other approved wilderness occupations should carry a handgun in the field.
Being involved in any approved wilderness occupation does not automatically qualify a person to carry a handgun, as each applicant must be considered on an individual basis.
In each case, the Chief Firearms Office (CFO) must establish the applicant’s need to carry a handgun, which must exceed the applicant’s personal desire to carry it. Individual work requirements and field locations may become a factor in the final decision making process completed by the Chief Firearms Office.
The Wilderness Handgun Safety Course provides firearms training for persons who may be approved to carry a handgun under specific conditions as follows:
The individual is working in a remote wilderness area and firearms are required for the protection of the life of that individual or of other
individuals from wild animals; or
The individual is engaged in the occupation of trapping in a province and is licenced or authorized and trained as required by the laws of the province.
The WHSC is not to be considered a course related to use of force and/or personal self-defence; nor is this a handgun hunting course.
Ownership of firearms in Canada is not a lawful right to bear arms. Firearms ownership is considered a privilege which includes specific authority provided to an individual for the carrying of a firearm related to his/her occupation.
